Digi-scoping

One of the capabilities of using digital technology is to attach the digital cameras to the more powerful spotting scopes and terrestrial telescopes. Usually the maximum power of a Film SLR telephoto was a magnification of 12X (a 600 mm lens) but with digital camera coupling to a scope – one can achieve magnification ratios of 40X or more (which is equivalent to 2000mm lens or higher). This is quite beneficial to a nature photographer especially for photographing Birds and distant objects. There are several dedicated websites on the topic of Digi-scoping and it’s worthwhile to explore this option.

But at the same time, digi-scoping technique is not as handy as using a Digital SLR with a telephoto lens. It is comparatively more cumbersome and the movements are not quick enough to capture birds in motion or in flight. Also the exposure becomes a critical factor as the object is far away and factors like wind, mist, fog, rain and heat currents indeed have an impact on the resulting image. The digi-scopes cannot be used without a very sturdy tripod and carrying this to field locations might turn out to be a tedious task.

It is recommended that before you plan to build your own digi-scoping equipment, look around for various scopes, their fittings, matching assemblies and the compatible digital camera models. Some camera manufacturers supply their own digi-adaptors which fit well with known digiscopes / telescopes.

Please be careful not to spot the scope directly towards sun.
